Many of us try really hard to lead a wholesome lifestyle…healthy food, lots of water and plenty of exercise. Then there are times when a carrot stick just doesn’t hold a candle to a rack of finger-licking ribs. Sometimes you want to throw caution (and that carrot stick) to the wind and dive into some good old-fashioned comfort food. This list is for those of you searching for an indulgent, warming and maybe even nostalgic bite to eat. Classic meat and potato dishes, ooey gooey cheesiness and decadent bites of yum! We asked our restaurant partners what their best comfort food dish was and they proceeded to tempt us with meals that made our mouths water. Can we get an order of everything, please? Here’s some of the most delicious comfort foods found in Erie County.
Arundel Cellars & Brewing Company - Pulled pork nachos as well as their pulled pork sandwich is tops among visitors at Arundel. Pair it with Arundel’s caramel hard cider, a seasonal fall favorite.
Bayfront Grille at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel – It is HIGHLY recommended you try their 10 oz. Strip Steak which is served with confit mushroom, lemon grilled asparagus, sun choke puree and garlic parmesan frites (that’s fancy talk for fries). Pair it with a classic red wine or their signature cocktail, a Presque Isle Old Fashioned.
The Brewerie at Union Station – You can’t go wrong with a steaming bowl of Three Onion Ale Soup - A twist on a classic French onion soup using house made beer, a mixture of onions and leeks, topped with croutons and melted Swiss. However when it comes to true comfort, Brewerie serves up ooey gooey mac & cheese not one, but THREE ways! Mac & Cheese Steak-Thinly shaved steak, sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, cheddar jack mac. BBQ Pork Mac & Cheese -Pulled pork topped with house made BBQ and crispy fried onions, cheddar jack mac. Buffalo Chicken Mac -Boneless Buffalo wings, hot sauce, bleu cheese crumbles, cheddar jack mac.
Firebirds – You’ll get a true meat and potatoes meal with Firebird’s American Kobe Beef Meatloaf; served with a divine Portabella mushroom sauce, spiced pecan green beans and a choice of side. We recommend that side be either the loaded baked potato or parmesan mashed potatoes.
Like My Thai – How about comfort food with an international flair? Have owner/chef Mike whip you up a traditional Pad Thai dish with a protein choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu. Heat ranges from 0 to “oh my lord this is hot!” 5. Chicken Pad Thai #3 is the most popular with customers but if Pad Thai isn’t your thing we suggest any one of their awesome curry dishes.
Jersey Mike’s – Ask any Jersey Mike fan and they’ll tell you the Original Italian Sub made Mike’s Way with onions, lettuce, tomato, red wine vinegar, olive oil, oregano and salt is the way to go.
Molly Brannigan’s Irish Pub – A hearty Reuben Sandwich with house-cooked corned beef brisket, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing & sauerkraut, served on thick marble rye or their authentic Shepherd’s Pie with ground lamb & beef, caramelized onions, peas, carrots, piped & whipped Yukon gold potatoes and a cheese crisp is a wee bit of Irish heaven! We dare you to finish either of them in one sitting!
Pineapple Eddie Southern Bistro – Down home southern comfort food at its finest! Customers rave for the Chicken & Waffles – golden fried crispy chicken with a house-made Belgian waffle. A nap is definitely in order after this meal.
Samurai Kitchen & Sushi – Rejoice! The ever-popular Ramen has made its return to Samurai Kitchen this fall! For those of you unfamiliar with Ramen it is a delicately layered flavorful Japanese noodle soup with rich broth, noodles, protein and vegetables, typically topped with sliced hard-boiled egg.
Syd’s Place – Since 1930, Syd’s Place has been satisfying patrons with their traditional American cuisine including their famous Liver & Onions and homemade Meatloaf (you can also get the meatloaf as a HUGE open faced sandwich!).
Underdog BBQ – According to our BBQ sources, if you’re looking for the ultimate meaty cheesy comfort food, order the “Sassy Ashley Mac”. It’s loaded up mac n cheese goodness with a nice mound of pulled pork nestled on top.
Voodoo Brewery – We don’t know the voodoo that you do but you should do Voodoo and try their BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries and a tall Voodoo Love Child (a fruited Belgian beer) to wash it down.
What’s a great comfort meal without a great drink to go alongside it? Our area has plenty of selections to choose from whether it’s found in a pint, growler, carafe, mug, wine glass or just a good old fashioned red solo cup!
Lake Erie Ale Trail – 15 microbreweries spread throughout Erie and Crawford Counties.
Lake Erie Wine Country – 23 wineries across PA/NY including Lakeview Wine Cellars who suggest enjoying a glass of their Shipwreck Red (blended using locally grown grapes) which pairs perfectly with any pasta dish!
If you’re looking for non-alcoholic options, try a nice warm latte served up at Pressed and don't forget that many of our wineries, breweries and distilleries offer non-alcoholic choices too!
