Erie to Host Historic NCAA Women’s Frozen Four

Erie Sports Commission (a division of VisitErie)

Thursday Mar 11th, 2021

The 2021 NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship will be one for the record books, and when the top eight teams in the country take the ice from March 15-20, women from around the country will make history in Erie.

The event will be played exclusively in Erie this month, marking the first time ever that the national quarterfinals, national semifinals (popularly known as the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four), and the national championship game will all be held in one location – the Erie Insurance Arena. In a typical year, the quarterfinal games are hosted by the four top seeds in their home arenas.

This is just one part of the history surrounding the action this year. This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four – the most prominent women’s hockey tournament in the country.

To host the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four on our lakeshore is an honor any year, but it’s particularly important in 2021. This will be among the first championship events hosted by the NCAA nationwide since the pandemic shut down all sporting events in March 2020.

Much of the tournament will look different than in past years. There will be no red carpet entrance for athletes, nor any fanfare, and no raucous, screaming crowds will be in attendance when a national champion is crowned.

To even get to this point, participating programs had to abide by safety protocols put in place by both government officials and the NCAA all year for a chance to compete for a national championship, including regular testing for COVID-19. Having endured a wild and unprecedented season, the best teams in the country will still put on a show over seven games, capping a historic season that will put Erie on the map.

Now, the field is set at eight teams who will compete for the honor of being crowned national champions. That field includes Robert Morris, the champion of the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament, which was also hosted at Erie Insurance Arena, March 4-6, 2021. Other participating teams include Northeastern, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Colgate, Minnesota-Duluth, Boston College and Providence.

This is the second time that the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four will be played in Erie. The NCAA Women’s Frozen Four was last hosted at the former Tullio Arena in 2011.

A limited number of tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 12 at 12 p.m. (ET). Tickets will be $20 per game, with no daily or all-tournament passes available. In order to ensure physical distancing between parties, seats will be sold in pods of four and mask-wearing will be strictly enforced at Erie Insurance Arena. Tickets can be purchased at www.erieevents.com.
