Plastic pollution in our waters has many effects on humans, wildlife, and the environment. To illuminate this concern and its local implications, a new exhibit, PlasticPollution Solution: One Small Change, is open for viewing until October 31. The exhibit is located on the second floor of the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) with free admission. It is open from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM daily.
As a special part of this exhibit, the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie are sponsoring a free showing of the film A Plastic Ocean on Friday, July 20 at 7:00 PM in the Big Green Screen Theatre. Please note the film is limited to the first 175 guests. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Big Green Screen Theatre at (814) 838-4123. The film’s run time is 102 minutes.
A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us. The film’s idea came from producer Jo Ruxton, who joined an expedition to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the North Pacific Gyre, 1500 miles off the coast of San Francisco. When the expedition discovered free-floating microplastics instead of an anticipated solid mass that could be contained, Ruxton partnered with director and journalist Craig Leeson, cetacean (whales and dolphins) expert Dr. Lindsay Porter, plastics researcher Dr. Bonnie Monteleone, and free diving champion Tanya Streeter to dig deeper. Together they set off on a four-year global odyssey to explore the issue of plastics in our oceans and its effect on marine ecosystems and human health, including endocrine disruption.
