Presque Isle State Park is more than just a beach destination: it’s a year-round outdoor playground for kayaking and canoeing, hiking and biking, ice fishing, birding, skiing and more. Rentals are available for bicycles, surreys (a four-wheeled carriage style bike), paddle boards, motor boats, row boats, pontoon boats, canoes and kayaks at Waterworks Beach/Rotary Pavilion and at Graveyard Pond across from Misery Bay. Presque Isle has more than 15 miles of flat hiking trails, both paved and unpaved. The most popular and heavily used trail is the 13.5-mile Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose paved trail. Unpaved trails are located throughout the Park and include the Gull Point Trail, Graveyard Pond Trail and Dead Pond Trail.
Presque Isle State Park is open daily 5 a.m. to sunset.
Restroom facilities are located throughout the Park, and three are open year-round: Public Safety Building, Rotary Pavilion and the Perry Monument.
With over 216 acres, 5 miles of trails, and year-round programs there’s always something new to discover at Asbury Woods. The Asbury Woods property includes native species, old-growth forests, landscaped gardens, wetlands, boardwalk trails and dirt trails. The Andrew J. Conner Nature Center at Asbury Woods features animal exhibits, a touch-and-learn Discovery Classroom and free public access. The Brown's Farm Barn located on nearby Sterrettania Road provides additional programming space for summer camps, school visits and community programs. The Greenway Trail at Asbury Woods consists of adjacent tracts of land which provides a network of trails connecting Browns Farm and the Nature Center. The Greenway Trail provides ample recreational opportunities for hiking, running, biking, skiing, snowshoeing and wading in Walnut Creek. Asbury Woods hosts several annual events including Maple Festival, Winter Wonderland, From Hive to Honey and Scary Creature Feature.
Located west of Erie in Girard, Erie Bluffs State Park is an undeveloped 587-acre park with more than five miles of rustic hiking trails. The trails are rated easy to moderate, making them perfect for all levels of hiking experience. The views of Lake Erie from atop the Bluffs are spectacular. A trail favorite takes explorers through the gorgeous scenery of Wintergreen Gorge, a 3,900 feet long canyon along Fourmile Creek in Harborcreek. The Fourmile Creek Trail at Wintergreen Gorge was recently named a "2022 Great Place in PA" by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association.
Located 15 minutes south of Erie, Edinboro Lake is a peaceful 245-acre getaway. Pat Crawford Beach and the Billings Park Playground are found on the Lakeside Drive section of the lake and is open for swimming Memorial Day to Labor Day. Edinboro Lake has two free public boat launches and a handicapped accessible fishing pier. Fishermen cast their lines into the lake in search of species like large and smallmouth bass, muskie, panfish, and walleye.
Erie is the only county in Pennsylvania with three official BicyclePA State Routes (A, Y and Z) and three national bike routes: Northern Tier Bicycle Route (4,265 miles),the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route (2,006 miles) and the Underground Railroad Spur (153 miles). Coastal Living Magazine ranked Erie’s Presque Isle State Park’s 13.5 mile multi-purpose trail fourth on its list of the 18 best bike rides at beaches. Coming soon is the new Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail, which, when completed, is slated to be approximately 270 miles long. The trail will connect Erie and parts of New York State to the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail in Pittsburgh. The Trails at Six Mile offer mountain bike enthusiasts a place to play, with new trails and features being added every season. Whether you’re hooking up the RV or looking for tent camping, Erie campgrounds will provide you with places to toast marshmallows and spaces to become one with nature. Pampered campers can select from sites that feature indoor and outdoor pools, cabins and furnished cottages. Virginia’s Beach Lakefront Cottages and Camping and Lampe Marina Campground provide a unique camping experience on the shores of Lake Erie. Those who want to “rough it”, can select from campsites that offer no showers, electricity or other creature comforts.
