Erie has seen an increase in distillery openings, growing from one distillery to six in just under six years. With locations in Erie and in the surrounding towns of Corry and Edinboro, all the region’s craft distilleries are quickly making a name for themselves with award-winning spirits and inventive cocktails, all reflective of their distinct personalities and styles. If you’re a true spirit enthusiast with an appreciation for the art of the craft, you’ll be happy to learn that each distiller puts an emphasis on using locally sourced ingredients that represent the natural beauty of the Erie region. Items such as apples, honey, grains, berries, and herbs are used to create flavorful house-made spirits and syrups. On weekends, some distilleries complement their spirits, cocktails, and mocktails with live music, food trucks, restaurant pop-ups, themed parties, and tasting events.
The Lake Erie Ale Trail is not just about beer, it’s also about being part of a friendly, personable environment of the breweries and the brewers themselves. The Lake Erie Ale Trail is composed of 15 microbreweries, all located near the shores of Lake Erie. Each brewery has its own unique approach to brewing beer, refining simple ingredients, and transforming those ingredients into a wide range of ales of varying flavors, styles, and funky names. Some of Erie’s local beers, such as Major McNair’s Nut Brown, Marvintown, and Grape Lakes American Wheat have a story behind their names, reflective of the history and culture of the region. Pull up a stool, sample some brews, and chat with the brewers themselves, who are always happy to share their expertise with you. Give a cheer to local beer during the annual Erie Craft Beer Week (November) and Beer Coaster at Waldameer Park (May).
