Erie, PA Summer Guide: 5 Must-Dos When Traveling with Your Dog
Monday Apr 7th, 2025
In Erie, dogs don’t just tag along, they vacation, too! Whether it’s sniffing out a new trail or diving into Lake Erie, the region is packed with pup-approved experiences. Unleash some fun in Erie this summer, starting with these five dog-friendly summer activities.
Swim and Splash at Presque Isle State Park
Presque Isle, a National Natural Landmark, offers seven miles of beaches, including long stretches of space where dogs can splash in Lake Erie or play in the sand. Pups are welcome to swim at unguarded beaches (no lifeguard present). If you plan to join your dog, note that swimming is not allowed, but you can wade in the water up to your knees. At guarded beaches, dogs can hang out on the sand near the tree line, but not in the water. Signage at the park entrance shows which beaches are guarded. Dogs must be leashed at all times and never left unattended. Remember to clean up after your pet. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to sunset, with free admission and parking.
Explore Asbury Woods Trail System
With more than 234 acres of space and five miles of natural trails, Asbury Woods is the perfect environment to explore nature with your furry friend. The Greenway Trail is its most popular and longest, a moderately challenging 2.2-mile hike. If you and your dog are up for the challenge, the scenic views are worth it, particularly the steel walking bridge that spans picturesque Walnut Creek. There are easier trails, including the ADA-accessible .33-mile Boardwalk Trail and the .4-mile Fern Loop Trail. Leashed dogs are welcome on all trails. All hiking trails are free and open to the public daily during daylight hours.
Share an ice cream at Sara's
Whether it's before or after your adventure at Presque Isle State Park, or just a delightful treat after a car ride, pamper your pooch with one of Sara’s special doggie sweet treats. Your furry friend can enjoy a double scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with crunchy dog bone biscuits, served in a cute French fry tray while you indulge in Sara’s iconic orange/vanilla soft serve twist.
Howl at the Music at Penn Shore’s “Music in the Vineyards”
Set amidst scenic vineyards, this dog-friendly gathering invites you to relax and listen to live music in the open air alongside your furry friend. It's the perfect opportunity to unwind together in a beautiful outdoor setting, surrounded by music, wine, and the company of fellow dog lovers. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome to join in on the fun and relaxation.
Have a dog with your dog at Lucky Louie’s Beer & Wieners
Known for their extensive craft beer selection and wildly creative hot dogs, Lucky Louie's is also dog-friendly. Enjoy the company of your furry pal in their shaded, grassy picnic area while dining on delicious hot dogs, loaded fries, and ice-cold craft beer. This summer, try the seasonal dog “American AF”, a perfectly grilled Smith’s hot dog (made in Erie!) topped with picnic classics such as slaw, baked beans, and potato salad. There’s even an inexpensive option for your pup to enjoy, called “The Solo Dog.” It’s a grilled dog without the bun, served with a bowl of water, and best of all, it’s only one dollar!
